All gas plant and pipework is supported by materials which are classed as civil and structural, including the soil upon which they are either founded upon or buried within, there is a requirement for civil and structural engineers to design or appraise such components.

GL Noble Denton has a civil/structural engineering resource dedicated to the understanding of how civil/structural engineering materials and structures behave when subjected to a load or combinations of a load both with and without the presence of material defects.  Assessments and analyses are required to all traditional civil/structural materials used to support above and below ground pipework and equipment containing natural gas, LNG, oil, etc., along with access roads and other site infrastructure compliant with current IGEM Specifications and current British Standard requirements.

 

The purpose of a Senior Civil/Structural Engineer is to provide a wide range of technical consultancy services to the utility and energy industry, specifically in the fields of gas, oil and water transmission and distribution.

The successful candidate will interface with a wide range of disciplines within GL Noble Denton, and work with clients ranging from global blue chip oil, gas and energy companies, government agencies through to small local firms.

They will carry out conceptual designs, detail designs as well as assessing existing structure condition, checking design capability, producing solution proposals, budget costs and writing scope of works, specifications, and method statements for both new and repair/replacement work.  Following a successful assessment all GL Noble Denton civil/structural engineers are registered on the National Grid G/17 Appraisers and Approvers Database and therefore able to carry out work in accordance with the T/PM/G/17 procedure.

Key responsibilities will include:-

  • Work on projects to deliver solutions to customers within the timeframe, costs and quality standards agreed
  • Review and input into technical bid documentation and summarise key information in relation to scope.  To ensure documentation delivered within agreed timescales of Line Manager to meet client deadlines
  • Carry out site visit, design and deliver technical reports, appraisals to the highest standards required by the client
  • Produce a full close out report to all clients
  • Manage engineers and technical assistants, mentor and educate on high standards of work, technical knowledge, delivery of projects/activities and customer interface
  • Support recruitment, grow and motivate teams to deliver on key business objectives
  • Identify further new business opportunities.

Person Specification

To be successful in this role, and our business, you will need to demonstrate the following qualification, professional expertise and personal attributes:

Technical / Professional Expertise

  • Degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering (or similar relevant discipline), either Chartered or approaching Chartership
  • Demonstrable experience of working with all British Standards required to design and construct a civil/structural element(s), including the new European Standards
  • Evidence of dealing with varied civil and structural engineering aspects relating directly to oil and gas industry plant and pipelines including design of roads and other infrastructure
  • Proven knowledge and awareness of the many approaches to civil and structural design and the ability to advice on methods of design and construction
  • Broad awareness of gas industry standards and specifications including Institution of Gas Engineer standards IGE/TD/1, IGE/TD/3 and IGE/TD/13 including knowledge of IDN specific Standards and Procedures
  • Strong awareness of Health and Safety including CDM, Risk Assessments and the ability to write project specific Risk Assessments
  • Holding of an up to date 'Construction Site Passport' would be an advantage
